Since I entered into the secondary schooling, I was closely observing those who have been taking part in declamations, be they in urdu or English. I slowly and gradually develop the interest in this field. At this point of time I decided to be the part of this event happening in this school and if the experience becomes successful intend to widen the scope for participating in the declamations in urdu or English and not only this, my aim is to participate in the inter district and inter provincial declamations where I am quite confident that I could prove myself to be the high level debater. I gave up all my extracurricular activities and have been concentrating on the urdu declamation and my utter surprise I was placed at the top position consecutively for the last three years. This success has raised my hope and expectations that a day would come when I would be achieving the same heights in the English declamations for which the only impediment left is the taking of initiative with courage and confidence. To me the impossible word is not there if one is quite courageous and confident and has the will to do then everything is possible. On this analogy I now feel that there is nothing which could become a hindrance for me in achieving the high levels of achievements. The declamations provide knowledge, confidence and opportunity to express the talent of an individual. Once in the declamation top position is achieved by someone, it gives name and fame in the family as well in society.

The efforts of St Michaels Convent School in promoting the declamations as regular, annual activities are quite commendable and provide an opportunity to students to improve upon their intellectual capabilities.

Result of English Elocution 2012 (IX-XI)

The English elocution of the O levels was held on 24^th January, 2012. The participants were not well rehearsed some of them got nervous and forgot what they were reciting. Students were only reciting students were only reciting poems whereas they can read excerpts from different novels or plays. They did not time themselves. They were given two minutes, but most of them finished within a minute.

I would suggest that the students should face the audience so that they gain confidence, the teachers should be given a set of rules/guidelines for the elocution to that the teachers can prepare the participants accordingly and there would not be any confusion and we should invite teachers from other schools to judge elocution.

Participating in the SZABIST Model UN Conference 2011 was an immense pleasure.

Along with our fellow delegates in a bolstering display of teamwork, all of us put together our creativity and intellect to find solution to various international problems such as the spread of and use of landmines, or the increase of crimes by Somali pirates. It was extremely interesting to learn how the inner machinations of the United Nations work.

In the short span of four days, not only did we make new friends, but we also learned more that what we would’ve spending the same amount of time with the text book.

I was proud that I managed to scrape an Honorable mention, and was glad that the conference brought improvements in my speaking skills, and my ability to interact with other people.

I look forward to the next Model UN where I can put all that I learned to the test.

Participants of Spelling Bee Competition 2011

It was the first time that I had ever participated in the “Dawn National Spelling Bee”. There were three representatives from the school including me. The day at the Arts Council began well, with approximately 30 schools that competed in the 15-17 age groups. The first round was easy. They asked us about the words that were mentioned in the word list that was provided and were able to answer both words correctly. The 2^nd round also known as “the double sting round” was more competitive, but we had a strong team and cleared the round with highest score. It was literally a sign of relief for us and reaching the 3^rd round felt as if we have achieved what we came for.

This was the first time in the history of our school, that St Michael’s had reached the 3^rd round and were proud to know that we were third 3^rd best team to have competed in the age group. Although we tried our level best but were unable to make it to the last round. I was glad that I participated so that next year I can lead St Michael’s to victory.

Rotsky has truly been a wonderful experience for me. Various prestigious institutes took part among which St. Michaels Convent School was also a part. Two teams represented from our school with Sadia Elahi being the head delegate of St Michaels-B. The competition was really tough, having about more than 200 students. There were 4 rounds on the basis of which delegates were judged before heading out into the semi finals, with round 1 and finally round 4 ‘Impromptu Reading’.

I am really proud to state that out of those 200 students, Abdul Rehman, Ayesha Ilyas, Sadia Elahi, Haameem Shamsher and Sarwat Barkat Ali were among those top 20 students who qualified for the semi finals. After a tough competition, Sarwat Barkat Ali and Haameem Shamsher headed into the finals.

We all had our fingers crossed for the result, hoping to bring back the cup for the second consecutive year. The award constituted for ‘the best speaker for declamation’, ‘the best elocutionist’, ‘the best situation interpretation’ and ‘the best Impromptu reader’ followed by the award for the winners and the two runners up.

I am really proud to state that Abdul Rehman got the ‘Best Speaker for declamation Award’ followed by Haameem Shamsher getting the ‘Best Elocutionist’ and the runners upward. Moving on, each and every participant from our school worked really hard and at the end, it was all worth it.

This event of Arts competition was held at the Pakistan American Cultural Centre on 26^th October, 2011. Three students were selected for participation including myself.

The environment was quite friendly there. The hall we were seated in was comfortable and spacious. Many students were seen from different schools. We hadn’t seen the judges yet but other event managers and organizers were present.

The topic was kept a secret till commence of the competition. It was ‘The world as I see it’. We were given 10 minutes to brainstorm and decide what to draw.

I drew two faces, dividing my face in half. One side showed the beauty and treasures of the world, the other portrayed the destroyed and ruined part. The time allotted to us was 1 hour 15 minutes.

After the completion we had to wait for the judges to announce the result. Because of the large amount of students gifts through a lucky draw were also given.

This event was a great opportunity to promote Arts and encourage the youth to participate. I would like to be a part of this next year too.

Naat and Qirat Competition Winners of Classes IX – XI

The St Michael’s Naat and Qirat competition for grade 9, 10 and 11 was held in the auditorium on 19^th august 2011. I had participated in the Naat competition, as done in previous years also; I was familiar with the program.

First Sir Isaac gave a commentary regarding ramazan and all us participants. Then the Qirat competition started, followed by the Naat competition.

I felt really confident as I was I knew the judges and my friends and teachers; especially Miss Lubna also cheered me up. It felt really soothing and a serene environment was created by hearing the beautiful Quranic verses and harmonious praises of the Holy Prophet (pbuh).

In the end, Dr. Salima encouraged all students to work harder and improve ourselves and also appreciated the event.

Exploiting my vocal skills specially to recite Naats, has always been my passion and such events mean a lot to me and am obliged to secure the 1^st position.
